The wisest decision

~Nancy Ung ~

I was captivated by God's presence

My name is Nancy Ung and I became a born-again Christian on 6 March 1989. When I was a young believer, I had a zeal for God and His words. Every morning I would wake up early to read the bible and draw near to Him before I set off to school. I was captivated by God’s presence and didn’t want to miss a day without first having communion with Him. As a result, within a short period of time, I finished reading the books in the New Testament. Also, I did not miss any meetings or cell groups. I enjoyed being in the midst of brothers and sisters. Their genuine love and care, their true joy and happiness captured my heart. Joining bread breaking and prayer meetings were the highlights of my week. I enjoyed pursuing God together with brothers and sisters.

Persecution

Soon my honeymoon period with God was backfired in persecution. My parents disagreed with me going to church and spending time with brothers and sisters. They ridiculed about my faith and refused to let me out the house on Sundays. I remembered vividly how I used to creep out the house quietly without them noticing and knowing that I would have to face the consequences on my return. I was being scolded at by my parents every time I came back from church, which for me was unusual because I was perceived as a good girl who had always been obedient and submissive to their rules. As much as I would like to please my parents, I couldn’t deny the fact that God is real and he has completely changed my life from once feeling lonely and sad to gaining exceeding joy and happiness. I would not want to give up. I wanted my parents to accept God and know His salvation too. So, I dedicated my lunch time to fast and pray for them.

God saves my family members

In March 1995, my mother believed and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour. God answered my prayers! My mother was a good Christian who enjoyed attending fellowships and meetings. Every time she listened to hymns and sang along, my father would join in. He was also interested in reading the bible. But still, his heart was as hard as bricks. He couldn’t give up his sinful pleasures. Whenever my mother and I preached the gospel to him, he acted defiantly and refused to believe. By the grace and mercy of God, in May 2013, on my father’s dying bed, with his last breath, he accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour. I know for a fact that my parents are now in a better and happier place together and one day I will reunite with them.

My ministry

After having worked in the city for several years and fully immersed in the hustling and bustling life of the city, I could not continue with what I was doing. My spirit was dry and my vision became blurred. I began to evaluate my values and purpose in life. As a Christian I knew life was more than wealth and fame. How I lived my life for God was more important. Ever since I was a young believer I have been inspired by those brothers and sisters who stepped out their comfort zones and went to a foreign country to spread the words of God. I admired their courage and love for God. I also wished that one day I could do the same. In March 2001, I fulfilled my wishes. I left my job and went abroad to Vancouver. I stayed there for six months supporting the needs and work of the church. I learned to live a humble and simple life in peace and harmony alongside brothers and sisters. I was content that I could pursue God together with them. Subsequently after this trip I continued to travel to different places to help the churches with ministry work. In March 2003, I went to Taiwan. I worked and lived there for a year and support the church with gospel work. I saw that there is a great need for the gospel in the world particularly in poorer countries. So I went to Fiji, South Africa, and the Philippines respectively, to support the gospel work there. I learned to adapt to the lifestyles and cultures in these countries and my horizon have broaden by these experiences.

The wisest decision

God has been my guide, strength, and comforter in my life. Since the day I believed in Jesus, I never looked back. It was the wisest decision I had ever made in my life!
